Let’s make renewing your driver’s license as smooth as your next road trip. Whether your card is about to expire or has already done so, being prepared with the right documents will save you time and stress.
What to Bring to the DLTC
When you head to your nearest Driving License Testing Centre (DLTC), make sure you have the essentials ready:
1. Your ID & License Documents
Bring your original South African ID (Smart ID or old ID book) and a copy. You’ll also need your current driving license card — even if it’s expired. If it’s lost or stolen, get an affidavit from the police to explain that.
2. Proof of Residence
A recent document (not older than 3 months) showing your address is required. Think utility bills, bank statements, or municipal accounts. If it’s not in your name, include an affidavit from the bill holder confirming you live there.
3. ID-Sized Photos
Most centres still ask for four black-and-white or colour ID photos. Even if they take digital photos on arrival, bringing prints can avoid delays if the system is offline.
4. Application Form (DL1)
This is the official renewal form. You can grab it at the DLTC or pre-fill it before you arrive.
5. Eye Test
You’ll need an eye test. You can do this on the spot at the DLTC or see a registered optometrist ahead of time and bring the certificate.
6. Payment for Fees
There’s a renewal fee (generally between about R200–R300), and if your licence has expired you might want a temporary licence while you wait for the new card.
Extra Tips
Drivers aged 40 and older are now often asked for an eye test certificate with each renewal.
It’s usually smart to renew about 4 weeks before expiry — applying late could mean extra steps or costs.
If you want to skip long queues, consider booking online where available, especially in provinces like Gauteng.
Ready to hit the road again? Gather these documents, arrive a bit early, and you’ll be cruising with a fresh licence in no time.
