Few vehicles in automotive history are as deeply connected to adventure as the Land Rover Defender. For decades, it has symbolised exploration, endurance and discovery — and now, that legacy is roaring back to life with the return of an iconic off-road challenge: the Defender Trophy.
More than 25 years after the legendary Camel Trophy last tested drivers and machines across the world’s harshest terrain, Land Rover has revived the spirit of adventure in a modern, purpose-driven way.
A Legendary Challenge Reborn
Originally launched in the 1980s, the Camel Trophy became known as the “Olympics of 4x4,” pushing teams through remote jungles, deserts and wilderness while showcasing the durability of Land Rover vehicles. The event wasn’t just about competition — it also played a humanitarian role, supporting communities and conservation efforts along the way.
Fast-forward to 2026, and Land Rover has brought back that adventurous DNA with the Defender Trophy, combining extreme off-road challenges with environmental and conservation initiatives. Partnering with the Tusk Wildlife Trust, the event aims to leave a positive impact on the landscapes and communities it touches.
South Africa Takes Centre Stage
Interest in the Defender Trophy has been massive, with entries from more than 75 countries. From over 600 applicants, only 12 national finalists were selected, with two competitors set to represent South Africa at the global finals later this year in Southern Africa.
Participants must demonstrate teamwork, resilience, physical endurance and problem-solving skills — exactly the traits the Defender brand has always represented.
The Defender Trophy Special Edition
Competitors will take on the challenge in the new Defender 110 Trophy Special Edition, built specifically for adventure. With rugged styling, expedition equipment and impressive power, the vehicle is ready to conquer any terrain. Features include:
Powerful D350 engine delivering 275 kW and 700 Nm
Intelligent Terrain Response system
Air suspension for added ground clearance
Expedition roof rack, snorkel and off-road accessories
It’s a modern Defender built to honour its heritage — tough, capable and unmistakably iconic.
More Than a Race — A True Test of Spirit
The Defender Trophy is not just about driving. Participants face navigational tasks, physical challenges, teamwork exercises and conservation projects, including building owl boxes and tackling obstacle courses. It’s a reminder that true adventure is about resilience, responsibility and respect for nature.
A Symbol of Freedom and Exploration
For off-road enthusiasts, the Defender Trophy marks the return of something special — a celebration of capability, exploration and purpose. Whether tackling rugged landscapes or cruising city streets, the Defender remains one of the most versatile and respected SUVs on the planet.
At The Dealers Group, we love vehicles that tell a story — and the Defender’s story is one of endurance, adventure and timeless design.
