Fuel Price Shock Coming in April – What South African Drivers Should Know

South African motorists may need to brace themselves for a tough start to April. Early projections suggest that fuel prices could see one of the biggest increases in recent years, driven by global events, a weaker rand, and local tax adjustments.

Why fuel prices are suddenly rising

There are a few key factors behind the expected spike:

1. Global oil prices are climbing

Tensions in the Middle East have pushed international oil prices higher, with Brent crude jumping significantly in recent weeks. Because South Africa imports most of its oil, global price changes directly affect what we pay at the pump.

2. The rand has weakened

Fuel is priced in US dollars, so when the rand weakens, it makes imported fuel more expensive. Even small currency shifts can quickly translate into higher pump prices.

3. Annual fuel levy increases

April is traditionally when government adjusts fuel-related taxes. For 2026, increases in levies — including the carbon fuel levy — are expected to add further pressure to the final pump price.

How much could fuel go up?

While final prices will only be confirmed at the end of March, early estimates suggest:

  • Petrol could rise by roughly R2.40 to over R3 per litre

  • Diesel could increase by around R4.40 to R4.80 per litre

Some analysts warn that if global oil prices remain elevated, increases could be even higher.

What this means for motorists

Higher fuel prices affect more than just your next trip to the petrol station. They can also increase the cost of transport, deliveries, and everyday goods — putting pressure on household budgets and businesses alike.

For drivers, this often means:

  • Spending more on monthly fuel

  • Looking for vehicles with better fuel efficiency

  • Planning trips and commuting more carefully

A good time to rethink your next car

With fuel costs expected to rise, many South Africans are starting to prioritise vehicles that balance performance with efficiency. Whether it’s a reliable diesel SUV for long distances or a compact petrol model for city driving, choosing the right vehicle can make a real difference to your monthly costs.
